Ellenor Jorgenson's 37-year legacy at the iconic Daintree Village Hotel

For an impressive 37 years, Ellenor Jorgenson, a beloved local of Daintree Village, has been the driving force behind the iconic Daintree Village Hotel. In an interview with Newsport she shared her heartfelt connection to the establishment and reminisces about some of her most notable memories over the years.
It was in 1986 that she recalls officially becoming an employee, marking the beginning of 37 years of employment.
Through floods, fires, and multiple changes of ownership she has remained dedicated to the job and has become a well-known member of the community.
Ms Jorgensen began working at the Daintree Village Hotel when she was just 16, helping in the Post Office with her mother and the postmistress.
When asked why she has stayed for so long Ms Jorgensen stated, “I just really enjoy talking to all the people, seeing seasonal tourists come back time and time again”.
Celebrity encounters and fond memories
According to Ms Jorgensen the Daintree Village Hotel embodies a close-knit family environment and boasts an exceptional atmosphere for its staff and patrons alike.
As she reminisces about her fondest memories, one particular highlight stands out; the excitement of celebrities visiting the town.
While working at the Daintree Village Hotel she has met many well-known people over the years, including Paul Hogan and Pink.
Beyond celebrity encounters, Ms Jorgensen emphasised that the Daintree Village Hotel serves as the heart of the community.
“It is where everyone comes to have a chat, share the news of their day and grab a drink,” she said.
“I have loved being able to get to know all the locals and build relationships with them over the years.”
Centre of the community
The Daintree Village Hotel has always been the centre of the community, even in the early years of the township when it was just a small general store.
Ms Jorgensen and many other locals believe the hotel is the light of the Daintree Village and without it, the town wouldn’t be the same.
Small businesses like this are incredibly important to the Douglas Shire community, not only do they hold great significance to locals such as Ms Jorgensen, but they are also large contributors to the tourism industry that our area thrives off.
