Mossman’s breathtaking landscapes have been an inspiration for a brand-new circus performance set to hit the stage in Cairns this Friday.

Circa Cairns, a First Nations led circus ensemble, has created an energetic and exciting show called The Wet which is a reflection of the Far North during this time of year.

Circa Cairns creative lead and Wakka Wakka man Harley Mann said the show was produced in a unique way.

“It’s like nothing we’ve done or seen before,” he said. 

“We were engaging with community and going out on country where we could listen and be inspired to make a work that felt like it came from this place.”

Mossman was just one of the many places across the region that served as compelling inspiration for the show.

“We visited Mossman, along with a number of other locations, and we went on a beautiful hunting tour with some local mob, a combed through wet lands and got inspired by the landscape,” Mr Mann said.

“I love Mossman, it was really beautiful.”

The Wet integrates cutting-edge circus performance with the power of First Nation story telling and explores the unique environment of the Far North in an innovative and captivating way.

“If you’re from this place, it’s a live representation of the complicated nuance of being in this area this time of year, it reflects relationships and how people and animals coexist told through robust acrobatic movements,” Mr Mann said. 

“There’s an observation that the Far North is often misunderstood and misrepresented; we want to encourage audiences to connect a little more to the beauty of this environment."

Mr Mann said he hops Circa Cairns will bring greater performance opportunities to locals.

“We are hoping to be apart of the next generation of circus and physical artists emerging out of the Far North area.”

The Wet premieres this Friday, February 10, at Cairns Performing Arts Centre.
