A familiar face with a nose for a story has joined the Newsport team eager to get herself reacquainted with all the wonderful happenings around the region.

Local Gizelle Ghidella moved to Brisbane a number of years ago to study a Bachelor of Journalism at the Queensland University of Technology.

Upon her relocation to FNQ she soon linked up with the Port Douglas and Mossman Gazette for a number of years prior to its closure in 2020.

During her time in the Douglas Shire Gizelle worked with many key members of the Douglas Shire community to produce engaging local news stories for print and online.

“We’re delighted to have Gizelle on board with us at Newsport,” editor Michael Warren said.

“Gizelle has a strong list of local contacts and knows the issues and matters that are important to our readers.”

On top of that Newsport also welcomed a second freelance journalist to its team this week.

Richard Dinnen is no stranger to local readers having lived and worked in the tropical Far North since 2002.

He’s best known for his work on radio with ABC Far North, where he hosted the local drive time show and kept the region informed during cyclones, floods, and emergencies for many years.

Richard was also a foreign correspondent for the ABC, serving in Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, and most of the Pacific island nations.

“Again, Newsport is very happy to secure Richard’s services,” Mr Warren said.

“Richard is a seriously experienced journalist with a great eye for a story. “He’s another wonderful asset for the business.”
