TRAILBLAZER: Mossman High student lands huge accolade for services to Wonga Beach fire brigade
COMMUNITY MINDED
Igniting inspiration among her peers, Amber Yendle, a Year-12 student at Mossman High School and an active member of the Wonga Beach Rural Fire Brigade, has been named North Queensland Young Volunteer of the Year.
Amber’s commitment to fire safety education and community service has set her apart among a select group of nominees across Queensland.
Her exceptional contributions stood out, earning her the prestigious title in North Queensland, which stretches from Cardwell to Cape York.
Amber, who was unaware of the fact that she was nominated, humbly stated she was honoured to receive the award.
“The recognition is welcome and highly appreciated, but at the end of the day, none of the volunteers do it for recognition or awards,” she said. “We do it because we love helping our communities and being involved.”
Inspired by her family's legacy of service, Amber’s commitment runs deep.
With two years of dedicated participation at the brigade, she has taken an active role in community events, educating people about fire safety, and being ready to help during emergencies.
“Helping the community when they need it really feels good and I’m happy to be able to help out,” she said.
Defining moment
Looking back at her two years' involvement, Amber recalls a vivid memory.
As she was driving home from training one night with her father and brother, they came across a car fire.
“We hopped out of the car immediately and distinguished the fire,” she said. “It was one of my first times I got to work with the auxiliary team in Mossman, it left a lasting impression and sparked my interest in a potential career as a firefighter.”
This experience also fuelled her desire to inspire others to make a difference.
As she approaches the conclusion of her school years, Amber's horizon remains wide open.
“As I am finishing school, I am keeping my options open, but I know I will continue to help the community as best as I can and remain an active member of the Wonga Beach Rural Fire Brigade.
“I also hope to encourage other kids my age to get involved and help make a difference.”
