Man to face court after early morning Palm Cove car raid nets weapons

A 26-year-old Cairns North man will face Cairns Magistrates court today after allegedly being found asleep inside a car, in the middle of a road, with a gun beside him in the early hours of this morning.
Police said a member of the public alerted them to the status of the vehicle at around 1.30am which was stopped in the middle of Veivers Road in Palm Cove.
Upon arrival Police allegedly discovered a firearm on the seat beside the man, at which point he was removed from the vehicle.
Police said a further search of the vehicle located further firearms that had been reported stolen in a previous incident at a Julatten address on August 14.
The man has been charged with one count each of unlawful possession of weapons, enter dwelling, unlawful use of motor vehicle and possess utensils.
Meantime, Police confirmed they have charged a Mossman man after a traffic intercept near Mount Molloy on Saturday, August 12.
Police will allege the 21-year-old Mossman man was intercepted on the Mulligan Highway for exceeding the speed limit at about 6.30pm.
Police required a breath test and it will be alleged he returned an breath alcohol reading of 0.102 per cent BAC.
He was later charged with driving whilst under the influence of liquor (mid-range drink driving) and his licence was immediately disqualified.
The man was also issued a Traffic Infringement Notice for $1,161 and incurred six demerit points for exceeding the speed limit after travelling 134km in a 100km zone.
He is scheduled to appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court on September 4.
