Motorists reminded not to be caught out as major road closures loom for Cairns Ironman
ROAD CLOSURES
Douglas Shire residents have been reminded to not be caught out by upcoming closures to the Captain Cook Highway and other local roadways as part of the annual Cairns Ironman program.
The yearly closure of the main highway arterial between Port Douglas and Cairns for the Ironman is an annual pain point for many local residents and businesses, including those such as Hartley’s Crocodiles Adventures that rely on heavy weekend visitation, particularly, Sundays.
As is stands the Captain Cook Highway between Veivers Rd (Palm Cove) to Beor St (Craiglie) will be completely closed from 5:30am - 5:30pm on Sunday, June 18.
Trezise Rd along the Captain Cook Highway will also be fully closed up to Mowbray River Rd from 5:30am - 5:30pm.
In addition Spring Creek Rd will also be totally closed from 5:30am - 5:30pm, with local access only.
If you need to head to the airport on June 18 between 5.30am and 5.30pm you are advised to give yourself plenty of time by taking the Mulligan and Kennedy Highways, via Kuranda, onto Smithfield and eventually to Cairns airport.
Port Douglas markets will operate as usual on June 18.
The Cairns Airport Ironman 70.3 Cairns starts at 6.35am and the main full ironman begins at 7:40am.
