More Captain Cook Highway overpassing lanes between Douglas and Cairns a possibility - TMR

Long suffering Douglas Shire commuters who regularly make the drive to Cairns and back along the windy Captain Cook Highway may enjoy fractionally speedier trips in the future between the two neighbouring Far North hubs.
At times traffic can bank right up at certain points during the commute if there is a truck, caravan or in general, just a slow driver that forces traffic to drive way under the speed limit for long parts of the journey.
As it stands there are only two main overtaking areas between Douglas and Cairns and this has prompted TMR to at least look at discussions around constructing more overtaking lanes on this stretch of roadway.
“We recognise the benefit of overtaking lanes,” a Transport and Main Roads spokesperson told Newsport.
“They give motorists safe opportunities to pass, reduce travel time and improve traffic flow.
“The Captain Cook Highway from Cairns CBD to Kewarra Beach has multiple lanes in each direction.
“The single-lane section between Kewarra Beach and Port Douglas includes two overtaking lanes for motorists to pass slower vehicles safely.
“One is north of Ellis Beach and the other in Wangetti.
More passing opportunities are being considered for the Captain Cook Highway between Port Douglas and Kewarra Beach.
“Construction of overtaking lanes on this section is currently unfunded.
“They will be prioritised against other competing projects across the state as funding becomes available.”
