Why Port Douglas is becoming a ‘jewellery hub’

Port Douglas is slowly becoming more than a tropical holiday destination as more and more people are travelling up to our far northern town to buy shiny gold and beautiful gemstones.
With a lot of creative people in town it’s no wonder that there’s a great selection of unique and handcrafted jewellery. Whether you're looking for diamond rings or chunky necklaces, there’s certainly no shortage of jewellery stores and studios in our tropical town.
Lindsay Currie, owner of Port Douglas Jeweller said he has noticed a growth in jewellery sales.
“Many clients bring their jewellery to be remodelled, or repaired or they take a class and make something themselves as a memento of their holiday. We have people coming up from Melbourne to attend our jewellery making workshops.
“We also get couples who travel to Port Douglas to get their wedding rings made with us and then return to our town to be married.”

Mr Currie said that he thinks Port Douglas could definitely be turning into a ‘jewellery hub’.
“We have a wonderful selection of all styles of jewellery in Port Douglas. Our town offers a wide range of jewellery designs from diamonds, gemstones and pearls to natural products.”
Bianca Todorov, from Ewa Tribal Jewellery, said she has ladies from surrounding areas such as Cairns and Mission Beach visit Port Douglas specifically to attend the Sunday market, or to visit her studio to view pieces from Ewa's latest collection.
“These are clients seeking unique handmade pieces where they can also form a relationship with the creator themselves,” she said.
Ms Todorov’s collection is inspired by her time spent in Papua New Guinea, where she had access to ceremonial adornments made and worn by the local people.

Anna Winter, manager at Sportscraft Port Douglas, told Newsport that, as a consumer, she noticed more and more jewellery makers popping up in Port Douglas, “making incredible stuff”.
“Port Douglas is all about fashion. People come here on holidays and they go out for dinner at one of our exceptional restaurants so they want to buy a beautiful outfit to wear with matching, locally made, jewellery.
“It’s all part of a story when you are on holiday, people like to buy something that is locally made, for themself or as a gift.”
