Port Douglas nightlife: is there enough to do late?

Recent warnings against beach parties and drinking alcohol in public areas of Port Douglas have prompted a debate about whether a nightclub or similar venue could or should make a comeback to the popular seaside destination.
The last recognised ‘late night’ bar in town – that is, open past 12am – voluntarily cut back its closing time to midnight in 2020.
When Newsport reported police warnings that revellers can be fined and even face a magistrate for alcohol consumption and partying on beaches and in other public places, there were comments on our social media about how little else there is to do late at night in Port Douglas.
But another criticised government taxes and said a lot of people can’t afford $10 (or more) drinks in licensed establishments.
“It was a great government and do-gooder idea to increase the price of alcohol to the extent that no one wants to pay pub prices,” the person suggested.
Pub and bar managers we spoke to said they often are asked by customers, mainly backpackers and other visitors, if there’s anywhere to go after midnight only to have to give them the “disappointing” answer that nothing opens anymore in Port Douglas after 12am.
The local business chamber has made the point that the popular destination has, particularly in recent years, marketed itself as a family destination and that the need for a nightclub in Port Douglas might be dated.
“Families especially with young children aren’t interested in partying late,” a Chamber spokesperson said.
And any calls for a nightclub or similar late-night venue would have to be backed by a serious, viable proposal.
“A business like a night club is not something a Business Chamber can put forward. It has to be proposed by a venture or ventures, with proper research, including about planning and licensing requirements, viability and capital.”
