AN exciting addition to next year’s Port Douglas Gran Fondo festival from September 8-10 was confirmed this morning.

The inclusion of the September 9, 40km Hartley’s to Port Douglas mountain bike race will see competitors ride from Hartley’s Crocodile Farm, up Quaid Road, on to Black Mountain Road, along the famed Bump track to a finish at Four Mile beach.

“We’re excited to announce the Hartley to Port Douglas mountain bike ride has been added to next year’s program,” event spokesperson Bade Stapleton told Newsport.

“We feel this will prove another quality and fun activity for people to get involved with throughout the festival.”

Meantime, Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr has reaffirmed his excitement about this weekend’s inaugural event.

“We are thrilled to welcome more than 1000 cyclists to Port Douglas for the inaugural Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival with riding events on Saturday and Sunday,” he said.

“We are expecting a fantastic atmosphere this weekend and encourage everyone to come down and have a look.”

The Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival events starts tomorrow with the Criterium, a 2.2km lap circuit starting and finishing outside the Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina.

The Choo Choos free family ride will follow the criterium.

On Sunday the 136km and 100km Gran Fondo rides will be held from Port Douglas to Palm Cove and return.
In addition, a 48km one-way Medio Fondo ride from Palm Cove to Port Douglas will also take place.
