Cook MP Cynthia Lui hopes a housing summit chaired by Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk next month in Brisbane will identify solutions to assist those currently effected by the ongoing rental crisis across the Douglas Shire.

As it stands hundreds of locals, backpackers and others are either couch surfing, sleeping rough or call their car home at the moment as the Shire continues to feel the pinch because of a general lack of serious long term accommodation.

“I want to let those across the Douglas Shire know we are certainly working extremely hard to find ongoing solutions and options to this issue,” Ms Lui told Newsport.

“Everyone deserves to have a roof over their head at night and no one wants to see people in their community sleeping rough, simply because of a lack of stock or housing.

“We are constantly looking at increasing our stock and asking ‘what would that look like for those in the Douglas Shire?’

“I’m also looking to get the Queensland Housing Minister Leanne Enoch to the region in the new year, so she can meet with local leaders and relevant stakeholders to further investigate and work through this issue.”
