Approvals for new homes built in Douglas Shire have risen by nearly 50 per cent in the past year compared with the previous 12 months and the upward trend is likely to continue.

In 2021-2022 there were 108 approvals for new dwellings, providing an economic boost of more than $47-million to the area.

This was up from 73 new homes the year before, and represents a 47.9% increase in new home approvals.

In 2021-2022 there were 315 building approvals, up from 260 the year before – these figures also including minor works such as renovations, alterations or additions, erecting retaining walls, new carports, or installing a swimming pool.

More housing lots on the way

The increase in home approvals is matched by a confident outlook from Douglas Shire Council that the region’s shortage in housing – paralleled in most parts of Australia – is being gradually addressed.

Mayor Michael Kerr said there is already positive movement in the shire.

“For example, an operational works application has been lodged for 22 lots in Daintree Horizons Estate which will bring another stage to the housing market in Mossman,” Cr Kerr said.

“Meanwhile, work is continuing at the Ocean Breeze Estate in Cooya Beach and Newport Estate at Craiglie.

“These are all fantastic housing developments which will help increase housing supply.”

Future economic development in regional plan

The State Government recently announced that the Far North Queensland Regional Plan would be updated to reflect latest forecasts.

Cr Kerr said that would provide the basis for identifying improved opportunities for economic development and liveability.

“The FNQ Regional Plan sets the long-term direction for how our region will grow and respond to change over time,” Cr Kerr said.

“Reviewing and updating the Regional Plan is vitally important for Douglas Shire Council and our community as we plan for future growth.

“Together with the State Government, we need to make sure we are well prepared to cater for growth in terms of infrastructure, including housing supply, roads and schools, as well as employment opportunities.”

Housing supply a priority

The Mayor added that Council is aware that like most of regional Australia, housing availability and staff shortages are an issue.

“It is important there is a balanced approach to accommodation within Douglas that meets the needs of long-term residents, seasonal workers, and visitors, who want to stay here and experience our beautiful Shire.

“As Council seeks to diversify and attract new business to the local economy, a sustainable amount of housing development is needed to ensure local employees have a place to live.

“Council is conducting a residential housing needs analysis to assess the current and future housing need.”
