Roll up your sleeves with these fun and rewarding volunteering opportunities in the Douglas Shire

Community Engagement
Doing good for the community, animals and nature can be very fulfilling. Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, we listed some great and rewarding opportunities for you below. Try something new while meeting new people, roll up those sleeves!
Take a shelter dog for a walk
It’s not only extremely rewarding, the dogs also love it.
Registered to hold 36 dogs, the Paws and Claws shelter in Craiglie aims to try and get the dogs out for a walk twice a day.
You can either take them for a walk from the shelter or take them for a short drive down to the beach.
According to Chris Barber - manager at the shelter - it really makes a big difference to the wellbeing of the dogs they have in care.
“When they get to go out on adventures during the day- our facility turns from a shelter to just a place they sleep at night,” he said.
Don’t have enough free time to walk a dog? There are more ways in which you can support the organisation; you can donate money or visit their Charity Shop in Mossman.

Become a rainforest rescue volunteer
Did you know that over three-quarters of Australia’s rainforests have been cleared since European settlement?
Every second an area of rainforest the size of a football field is destroyed, with devastating consequences for creatures, plants, the environment and us humans that depend upon it.
A non-profit organisation called Rainforest Rescue aims to protect the rainforest by revegetating and restoring rainforest plants and trees.
To help out, you can assist with seed collection, propagation and general maintenance at their Rainforest Nursery in the Daintree.
Love gardening and working outdoors? Why not use your green fingers and help out at the Rainforest Nursery.
Volunteers at the nursery generally have some experience in outdoor work such as gardening, landscaping, general labour, bush regeneration, land management and ideally have some knowledge of plant species and propagation.
With the support of a committed group of volunteers, the nursery produces on average 12,000 plants per year.
If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer you can find more information here.
Help clean-up our beautiful beaches
Plastic debris on our pristine beaches is a huge problem.
Luckily the Tangaroa Blue Foundation is dedicated to the removal and prevention of marine debris on Australia’s beaches and waterways and there is good news; you can help them.
Every month the foundation organises a Four Mile Beach clean-up with a group of volunteers collecting the debris and assisting in the sorting and recording of all debris collected.
The clean-up data you collect will help the foundation track litter to its source and prevent it from entering the waste stream and harming the Great Barrier Reef.
Not only is the foundation focussed on removing rubbish and trying to figure out how to stop it, they also provide a space for people to see firsthand the negative effects of marine debris on the environment.
Joining the volunteers on a monthly beach clean-up might alter your perspective on the daily choices you make and the effects those choices might have on the environment.
If you’re completely inspired and want to start asap, you can still register for the next following clean-up day at Wonga Beach this Friday.
Interested in joining the Great Barrier Reef Clean-up on the 21st of October or one of the other clean-ups and events? Have a look on their website calendar or head over to their Facebook Page.
