David Haratsis has challenged MP Cynthia Lui to a public debate about the need for proper public transport services in Douglas.

Local public transport campaigner David Haratsis recently issued a challenge to State Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui, to hold a public debate with him about the need for regular bus services in the Douglas region.

He proposed that the debate take place outside Coles in Port Douglas on October 21.

Seven days after the post, by which time Ms Lui had not responded to the challenge, Mr Haratsis, who runs the Public TransPORT Facebook page, issued a further challenge:

“I will donate $500 to the Port Douglas State School P&C if Cynthia Lui will agree to a public discussion/debate with me on this topic on 21 October 2022 (two weeks), outside Coles in Port Douglas,” Mr Haratsis posted.

“This is not a Parliamentary sitting day, so her calendar should be free, or at least able to be changed.

“Let's see if your local member is up for it!”

Newsport put the question to Ms Lui, and her response was as follows:

“I was not aware of the proposed debate at Coles Port Douglas but thank you for bringing it to my office’s attention,” Ms Lui said.

“I represent one of the largest electorates in Queensland and consequently have a very busy travel schedule.

“Regular engagements of mine include ‘mobile offices’, held at many different sites throughout Cook, including within Douglas Shire. I will hold one in Mossman in early November 2022. Details are yet to be fully finalised but I will share them on my social media pages.”

“All members of the public are of course welcome to meet me and raise any concerns directly.”
