An eventful week at the schools with a movie star disco, colour explosions and a read-a-thon fundraiser

Weekly school wrap-up
At our Douglas Shire schools there is always something happening. Each week Newsport will be summing up the events, achievements and news from the schools that make our region great.
Miallo State School
Miss Piggy, Harry Potter, Moana, Mean Girls and Maverick were all present at the movie themed disco last Thursday night at Miallo State School.
According to the Principal of the school, Anet Ridley, the night was well attended with some fantastic and inventive costumes on display from a wide span of movies.
“Prizes for best dressed and best dancer were given and limbo and corner competitions held, with one brave parent getting in on the act,” she told Newsport.
“It was a big night out, with some very wired or tired movie stars heading home. One movie star did manage to fall asleep before his limo arrived however.”
St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School
At the Mossman-based school they had a very colourful day during the “Minnie Vinnie” Christmas appeal.
It was a day full of smiles and laughter with the kids having the day of their life’s.
Even the Principal of the school, Kym Bennett, had a fantastic time!
Wonga Beach State School
At Wonga’s primary school they are currently running a very special fundraiser.
With a Read-a-thon the school aims to increase students participating in reading for pleasure whilst raising funds for their school.
Students set themselves a reading goal for the two-week period in which they read as many pages as they can while they collect sponsorship from friends, family or community members.
Miss Naomi explained to Newsport that the money raised will be going towards an upgraded reading corner in the school’s library.
“During last semester students completed a technology unit where they had to design a spreadsheet program using an iPad to record the data collected during a read-a-thon,” she said.
“Students have the option to use their program during the fundraising event which provides updated running tallies as they log an entry.”
Reading dates are from Monday October 17t until Sunday October 30.
Port Douglas State School
Last week students from Port Douglas’ primary school participated in their first ever Wonders of Science conference held at James Cook University in Smithfield.
The students gave some outstanding presentations as well as eight other schools from the Cairns region.
For the past three weeks the students worked extremely hard to plan, research, develop, edit, publish and practice their presentations.
With ingenuity and passion, they presented their science projects to a room full of fellow students, teachers and scientists.
Well done junior scientists!
Mossman State School
Mossman State School held their annual Junior and Senior Swimming Carnivals on Friday, October 21 at the Mossman Pool.
Sharon Case, head of teaching and learning at the school, said that the juniors had a fun morning of rotational activities.
“The students played water relay games, a ‘fill the bucket’ novelty event and participated in freestyle races,” Ms Case said.
“The senior students then took over the pool for the hotly contested house trophy.
“The swimming carnivals culminate the school’s annual 3-week swimming program where students from Prep to Year 6 are taught correct swimming strokes and survival strategies.”
The Mossman school also participated in the Wonder of Science Regional Conference last week.
“Year 4 students, Amanda, Chloe and Quinn, took first place in their division,” Ms Case said. “Year 5 students were awarded third place and the Year 6 team won the Lateral Thinkers Award for the day.
“Amanda, Chloe and Quinn are now entitled to represent our region in Brisbane at the State Conference in November.”
