Precautions advised despite low COVID cases locally

COVID LATEST

COVID hospitalisation in the Douglas Shire remains low as the holiday period approaches but we’re being advised to follow health advice to keep the latest wave of the virus at bay in our region.
There have been no COVID-19 hospitalisations at Mossman Multipurpose Health Service since November 1 – however, hospitalisations at Cairns Hospital have increased from seven on November 1 to 14 on November 23 (figures are released weekly only).
Health officials regard hospitalisation figures as being a far better measure of how COVID is going in the region, and its impact on hospitals.
“Statewide, the COVID-19 traffic light system has been elevated to amber; and we are continuing to follow this system,” Dr Don Mackie, Executive Director Medical Services at Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service said.
“This means there are currently moderate rates of COVID-19 community transmission, and Far North Queensland, alongside the rest of the state, is entering a new wave.
“Amber traffic light” advice
Dr Mackie advises:
“While the traffic light is amber, we recommend you wear a mask:
• in healthcare settings, including our hospitals
• indoors, if you can’t socially distance
• on public transport
• if you are older or medically at risk
• if you’re around people who are vulnerable to COVID-19.
“If you are sick, please stay home, and avoid contact with vulnerable people. And please continue to maintain good hygiene and keep up-to-date with your vaccinations.”
