Crash scene specialists continue to investigate the cause of an accident in which a 65-year-old truck driver was flown to Cairns hospital in a critical condition after a single-vehicle truck rollover on the Captain Cook Highway one kilometre south of the Cooya Beach turn-off, at Bonnie Doon.

“The driver was the sole occupant of the heavy combination vehicle (which was) carrying 25000 litres of molasses to Cairns,” Port Douglas Sergeant and Officer in Charge Damian Meadows told Newsport.

“The driver was entrapped in the vehicle and extricated by QFES and QAS before being transported to Cairns Hospital by Rescue helicopter in a critical condition.”

The highway Captain Cook Highway re-opened a short time ago after being closed for a number of hours overnight while the driver received attention and the scene was cleared.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is urged to contact Policelink or Crime Stoppers.
