At our Douglas Shire schools there is always something happening. Each week Newsport sums up the events, achievements and news from the schools that make our region great

Grandparents Day at St Augustine’s Primary School

It was a day full of grandma’s treats last Friday as the kids showed their special guests around the school.

Grandparents of the school community were invited to celebrate Grandparents Day and to bring along a special treat to share with their grandchildren at lunchtime.

Following lunch, all of the students hosting grandparents were invited to story time in the library where picture books were shown about different types of grandparents.

The day ended with a liturgy giving thanks for the gift of our grandparents.

Richelle Woods from St Augustine’s Primary said they were delighted to have so many families join them to celebrate.

“Our school choir performed for our special guests and each grandparent left with a small gift as a token of our love and our gratitude for the joy that grandparents bring to our lives,” she said.

World of Maths at Miallo State School

The ‘World of Maths’ came to Miallo last Wednesday.

The students had to work as a team to solve challenging maths problems at 17 hands-on maths stations.

The stations were designed to get students problem-solving across a wide variety of maths problems including number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability.

According to Principal Anet Ridley it was a fantastic day of strategy, discussion and mathematical concepts being tested and consolidated with hands-on materials and games.

“You know students are challenged when you see crunchy eyebrows,” she said.

Robots slinging pucks at Mossman State School

At Mossman State School they know how to handle robots.

Throughout a worldwide program called 'VEX robotics' students get the opportunity to create, design and engineer robots to perform specific tasks.

Jake Pendlebury is VEX and Senior Technology coordinator for Mossman State School.

He explained that every year, VEX IQ releases a new game or task for teams all over the world to compete in.

"The task for the 2022-2023 competition is called 'Slapshot'," he said. "The aim of the game is to engineer a robot to collect pucks from different dispensers and shoot them into a goal zone.

"A select group of students from Mossman State School have been working extremely hard to design and build their robots.

"Every year, VEX hold regional competitions throughout Australia. On Saturday, 29th of October, Mossman State School entered three teams into the Regional Competition held in Smithfield. From those three teams, one team took out first place in the 'Robot Driving Skills Challenge'.

"From this achievement, this team has automatically qualified for the 2022 National VEX IQ Robotics Competition which is to be held on the 3rd and 4th of December in Sydney, Australia.

"The Team representing Mossman State School in the National competition is composed of 6 students: Emily Harris, Jett Konop, Izaiah Lee, Amanda McKay, Emily, Beau and their VEX Teacher, Jake Pendlebury.

"The students are absolutely thrilled to be involved and blessed to have been given the opportunity to compete in VEX Robotics at a National level for the second time."

The students now have 4 weeks to modify their design and practise their skills. Let the countdown to Sydney begin!

Pet show and tell at Wonga Beach State School

It was a true animal kingdom last Tuesday at Wonga Beach State School as classes 3,4 and 5 celebrated their rewards afternoon by having a 'Pet Show and Tell'.

All students worked together to achieve this activity by following the school values: Being Safe, Being Respectful and Being a Learner.

Student brought in their dogs, chickens - both babies and fully grown- , birds and even a spider. The students really enjoyed showing off their loved animals!
