Port Douglas sits just outside the top four after putting together its best performance of the season to date to narrowly overcome a determined Bulls outfit at Raider Park.
Still licking their wounds after a disappointing round four loss to the Crusaders the Raiders turned in a much more disciplined effort, with only a Luke Edwards penalty goal proving the difference at fulltime.
Giacomo Cerchiaro, Taputoa Rea and Derek Letcher were amongst the try scorers for the Raiders.
The Raiders are now sixth, on nine points, but they do have a game in hand after their round three clash against Wanderers was postponed because of heavy rain.
“It was really pleasing to get the win against Barron,” pleased Raiders coach Stan Afeaki told Newsport.
“We’ve been focusing on retaining our own ball and I thought we did that well against the Bulls.
“It was disappointing to lose that game against Southside and we were determined to come out with a big effort against Barron.”
Meantime, in AFL, Port Douglas Crocs lost a blockbuster clash against defending premiers, Cairns City Lions at the weekend.
With Port trailing by a solitary point at three quarter time 65-66, the Lions managed to kick four goals to two in the final term to eventually secure a tight 14-9-93 to 11-15-81 win.
The turning point of the match took place in the second quarter with the Lions kicking six majors to one to turn a 21-point deficit into a seven point, 45-38 lead at the major break.
