Last Saturday, on World Belly Dancing Day, Mossman belly dancers ‘shimmied’ for domestic violence awareness.

Having practised for weeks, it was finally time for the women to shine on the big day with their Shimmy-Mob performance at the Mossman Farmers Market, Rex Smeal Park in Port Douglas and at the Mossman Gorge Visitor Centre.

As part of the Shimmy Mob Movement, belly dancers across the world danced in ‘flash-mobs’ on the same day to raise awareness of, and reduce, the statistics of domestic violence.

Rochelle Thompson, owner of ‘Belly Dance with Rochelle’ in Mossman, said that it was a fantastic day. “We danced at three beautiful locations, and the weather turned it on for us,” she said. “Lots of people were willing to join in and dance to support the cause.”

The group raised a total of $500 which will go to local DV services and Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service (CRDVS).

“I would like to thank everyone in the community for their generosity,” Ms Thompson said. “The ladies are all proud of themselves, but nowhere near as proud I am of each and every one of them.”
