Sharks pile on the pain

Mossman/Port Douglas has sent an ominous warning to rival clubs after smashing Yarrabah by 60 points to consign the home side to one of its heaviest losses in recent memory.
In an astonishing performance the Sharks piled on 13 tries to two to run away with the round one CDRL clash 72-12 at Jilara Oval.
The match was all but over in the 16th minute as the Sharks jumped out to a 16-0 lead. From there they were never headed, leading 38-6 at half time before continuing the rot for the entire second half.
The scoreline was a welcome result for new player coach Joel Marama who told Newsport leading into the game that his focus was on ensuring his players had the fitness to play for the whole 80 minutes.
“We felt last year that our fitness let us down,” Marama told Newsport shortly after the match.
“So that was a focus for us in the preseason – to make sure we played for the whole 80 minutes and had the fitness necessary to do so.
“Overall I’m really proud of the guys today. The game-plan was to build pressure, complete our sets and stick to our processes.
“The guys just want to learn and that makes my job easier. We know Yarrabah are a very dangerous side. It’s only round one and there is a long way to go.
“We are definitely not getting ahead of ourselves.”
The result also somewhat eases the pain of last year’s major semi in which the Seahawks upset the Sharks 46-30 on the way to winning the grand final against Innisfail.
In other round one results Innisfail beat Atherton 26-10, Southern Suburbs held off a fast finishing Gladiators outfit 26-24, Kangaroos outclassed Storm 40-28, and Brothers belted Tully 64-4.
