Muddies lose grand final series to Norths

Grand Final Loss
DOUGLAS Muddies quest for a fourth-grade title this season is over after losing to a Benjamin Bergamo inspired Norths outfit in a low scoring affair at Griffiths Park.
Needing a win to force game three of their 35 overs grand final series Muddies were bowled out for a meagre 87, 19 runs short of their required total of 106.
“We’re definitely disappointed with that performance,” Muddies captain Ethan McCullough told Newsport from Griffiths park.
“We wanted to put them under pressure, so we bowled first and that paid off for us early on.
“However, we didn’t get it done with the bat, which is disappointing.
“You never want to go out in straight sets. We beat these guys throughout the season and we always thought if we won today, we could get it done back home next week.”
It was the contribution of all-rounder Bergamo both with bat and ball though, that proved the difference.
Slated to come in at three, Bergamo pushed himself down the order to six after a flurry of early wickets had Norths at 5-63 midway through their innings.
Bergamo proceeded to score a run a ball 30 to steady the ship to help his team near the 100-run mark.
Soon after the writing was on the wall after the medium pacer took the first four wickets McCullough (0) King (1) Harris (0) and the big scalp of Bannan (2) to decimate Muddies’ innings just a few overs into their run chase.
From there, Muddies never recovered with only Troy Lehman (22) and Keith Taylor (16) posting scores above 11.
