Co-founder and head distiller of Devils Thumb Distillery raises a glass to the global win of their navy strength in the World Gin Awards 2022.

Monday 28 February 2022. One of Far North Queensland’s newest distilleries, Devils Thumb, reached global heights last week winning World’s Best Navy Gin in the World Gin Awards 2022.

The top honor for Devils Thumb comes after news, exactly one month ago, that the Port Douglas distillery had won silver and bronze medals for their Signature and Rainforest gins and the Australian title of Best Navy Strength Gin, which put them in the running for the ultimate global award.

Devils Thumb Head Distiller and co-founder, Mark Norman says the driving and defining force of the Navy Strength Gin lies in its inherently native Australian quality and distinctive, Far North Queensland, sense of place.

“The Navy Strength gin draws on the sensory aromas and citrus flavors of traditional botanicals like angelica, navel oranges and local bush lemons, and ingredients from our rainforest and reef landscape, notably native red finger limes and a touch of Great Barrier Reef seawater. Add in pure water sourced from the oldest rainforest in the world, and this gin has a special character – it is a harmony of many elements that make it truly unique,” Mr. Norman said.

Mr Norman also explains the production process that contributes to the flavours of the navy strength. He said that “the distillation process includes a combination of an extended steep of key botanicals, various vapour infusions along with careful dilution and resting which produces a multi layered spirit with individual flavours shining through”.

Devils Thumb co-founder, Craig Parsell said the team were thrilled to win this accolade from the World Gin Awards. “The awards provide a platform to focus the spotlight on Far North Queensland, its natural abundance, and what is a burgeoning hand crafted and artisan spirits industry,” he said.

In securing the world’s highest accolade, the 58.8 per cent alcohol based (ABV) Devils Thumb Navy Strength Gin competed against an impressive roll call of global winners https://www.worldginawards.com/winner-gin/gin/2022/worlds-best-navy-gin-world-gin-awards-2022

History of the World Drinks Awards

The World Drinks Awards date back to 2007 that saw the launch of the World Whiskies Awards by Whisky Magazine with the aim of promoting and rewarding the best whiskies in a comprehensive annual tasting. Since 2013 this has been expanded to include the most widely recognized spirits and spirit-based drinks under the umbrella of the World Drinks Awards of which World Gin Awards is a part along with World Whiskies, Cognac etc. The awards are presented each year by TheDrinksReport.com and are popular with both producers and consumers with award recognition often leading to a sell out within hours.

The judges comprise an international panel of experts.

The entries are blind tasted and scored to an enforced policy. Each drink is marked on aroma, flavor and finish with other elements also taken into consideration. Written tasting notes are created for each product. Once scored they are added together to give an overall mark which is used to calculate the best and top scoring spirits.
