The Port Douglas Community Hall and grounds turned pink on Friday evening with a gathering of like-minded people who support the wonderful local charity.

Kids In Need Donations (KIND) was formed in 2008 by locals for locals to raise funds for any child in the Douglas Shire who suffers from a life threatening or long-term debilitating illness. At this moment they have 18 children they’re helping in a myriad of ways.

Salute to Claudia

Last night was all about acknowledging Claudia Synge, also known as the ‘Bike Lady’, who is a constant fundraiser for KIND. Claudia is a familiar sight around Port Douglas collecting cans and bottles from the bins, local resorts, businesses, and individuals. She then converts the 10 cent refundable items into cash and donates the money to various charities.

She has pledged to donate $500 of every $1000 she makes to KIND. “Why not” says Claudia “every bit helps, and KIND is such a worthwhile organisation that does so much good in the Shire”. Originally from France via Sydney, Claudia says she will always live here and offer help where it’s needed. “You know life is very short and if we can give unconditionally to as many people as we can, why not do it”.

Crystal Leonardi’s son Sebastian was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 2 and the financial and emotional support of KIND made his and the whole families journey much easier. “It was amazing what KIND did and apart from financial help, knowing that some members of their committee had a similar experience with a child was comforting to us” says Crystal. She has penned a book called ‘Boy of Steel’, which takes the reader on a heart wrenching journey with a little boy fighting for his life and a mum and dad learning as they go. Part proceeds of book sales go to KIND

President says thank you

Danielle Bellero, the President of KIND, says “Claudia’s fundraising effort has been amazing The bike lady has given us $2000 in the last 4 weeks, just think about it, that’s 20,000 bottles or cans, what an almighty effort and she’s out there gathering these recycling items every single day”.
