Australia Post has indicated that the door is still open for areas such as Cooya Beach, Newell Beach and Shannonvale to receive a mail delivery service.

And a petition titled ‘Mail delivery for Cooya Beach, QLD 4873’, which can be accessed here, has attracted more than 340 signatories and likely to grow.

Wanted: Mail delivery service for Cooya Beach

Brian Lockwood, who started the petition a few months ago, said “This petition has been created in an effort to receive mail delivery from Australia Post to the residents of Cooya Beach, QLD 4873.

“By signing this petition you would like to have your voice heard and support the end result.

“Currently, we have to pay for a Post Office box and pick up our mail, in person, at the Post Office.”

But the Australia Post statement to Newsport, does offer some hope.

“Mail collection and delivery arrangements vary from place to place, depending on the size and needs of each community.

“For Cooya Beach, Newell Beach and Shannonvale, the current arrangement is for residents to collect their mail from a post office box or over the counter at the Mossman Post Office.

“We recognise that current mail collection arrangements may no longer suit the community and we remain open to reviewing the mail delivery arrangements for these areas.

“If there’s widespread support to change mail delivery arrangements within a community, they can submit a written request and we’ll run a mail poll where everyone in the community can have their say.”

Although AP did not respond to this, Newsport believes that there must be more than 200 homes in an area to receive mail.

According to the Douglas Shire Council, as of today Cooya Beach has 255 households; Newell Beach has 215 and Shannonvale 94.

Meanwhile, the following expressed their reasons for signing the petition:

Adele Matuzelis said: “Not safe leaving kids in the car to collect mail. It’s such a hassle when it’s hot getting them in and out including when it’s raining just to check out mail. Please lets get mail delivery to our homes.”

Debbie Cooper said: “I want physical mail delivery to my home. I do not see why a postal service is not available to this growing area. I also do not see why we have to PAY at all for a PO Box at all when Australia Post can't provide a home delivery service.”
