Douglas Shire Council has welcomed the $12.4 million investment by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to improve road safety on the Mossman-Daintree Road.

Starting early next month, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will be improving safety on the Mossman-Daintree Road.

The $12.4 million works are part of the Road Safety Program, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland government. This program aims to improve safety on the state-controlled road network with locations selected based on a history of crashes and/or key safety concerns.

Council said in a statement: “Council welcomes the much-needed investment by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to improve road safety on the Mossman-Daintree Road at locations between Syndicate Rd and the vicinity of Kylies Road.

“In response to community concerns, the department will also install new turning lanes and road re-alignment in the area between Syndicate Road and Atherton Street to help make the road safer for motorists to drive on.”

Road safety

The project will include shoulder widening, wide centre line treatments and intersection upgrades on the Mossman-Daintree Road at locations between Syndicate Road and the vicinity of Kylies Road.

These works will improve road safety and reduce incidents such as run off road crashes and head on crashes. In response to community concerns about road safety between Syndicate Road and Atherton Street.

TMR will also carry out the following works:

  • realign the Jones Street intersection and install dedicated turn lanes;
  • close Atherton Street access to Cedars St/Mossman Daintree Road;
  • install dedicated turn lanes into Syndicate Road.

A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said Stages Two and Three of safety works on Mossman-Daintree Road will begin next month.

“We are working closely with Douglas Shire Council to make sure the upgrades tie in with the nearby local government road network.

Safety concerns

“The upgrades are in response to safety concerns raised by residents and road users.

“The works on Mossman Daintree Road will improve safety for road users by removing hazards along the corridor and reduce the risk of head-on and run-off crashes.

“The wide centre line treatments (WCLT) will increase safety by providing additional space between opposing directions of traffic.

“Audio tactile line markings will also be installed on selected sections of Mossman- Daintree Road. These audible line markings alert motorists through both sound and vibration when they are veering out of their lane into oncoming traffic or the edge of the road.”
