My life in FNQ
I am grateful I grew up in Far North Queensland and have many great memories of living in this area for most of my life.
One of my favourite times of the year would be the wet season. A time when the rivers flood and the grass is greener than ever. I always remember hearing the heavy rain crash down onto the roof of our house sometimes for days on end.
Another memory that stands out would be going on day trips across the Daintree River to Cape Tribulation. Even just spending a day over there provides an opportunity to be amongst the rainforest and a chance to see all the amazing wildlife our region has to offer.
Being able to enjoy these fantastic experiences regularly certainly makes me appreciate why Port Douglas and its surrounding area has become such a popular destination for tourists around the globe.
I decided to put this to the test and interview some visitors on Macrossan Street, Port Douglas.
The reasons tourists visit
One of the main reasons many tourists plan their stay here is for our tropical climate and warm weather that is often perfect for a day on the water or a picnic in the park. Diana and Margaret, two sisters from South Australia are glad to be away from the cold back home and have been loving their time in Port Douglas thanks to the beautiful weather and the great ice cream. The two will be holidaying here until September before returning home, giving them a few more months to cherish the blue skies and palm trees as well as sample even more ice-cream flavours.
A great way to spend a day in Port Douglas is of course at the beach and is the reason many tourists choose to visit. Crickette and Rob from Melbourne have returned to Port Douglas for the first time in 25 years and have visited multiple times in the past.
“The beaches up here are the best thing, even though we can’t swim in any of them!”
Despite this the sunny beaches are the main reason Rob and Crickette have chosen to holiday here in Port Douglas and will be the reason they will travel here again.
One of the more common answers tourists gave is that they are in love with the different variety of food Port Douglas has to offer.
“I really like all the little shops and cafes that line the street,” said Margaret.
Colyn another tourist who is departing Port Douglas at the end of the week said she really enjoyed trying all the seafood, Nat and Lara who are visiting for a family wedding are also in awe of all the restaurants Port Douglas has to offer and are certain they want to return to Port with the hopes of being able to explore the Daintree as-well.
We are all lucky to live in such a perfect place and thanks to our booming tourism industry businesses can continue to thrive and support the area.
