“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

Under Eights Week is an event proudly initiated by Early Childhood Australia Queensland Branch and has been running for sixty years across the state.

Children from day care, schools, playgroups, and communities celebrate being under eight years old with a theme set annually, this year was ‘Play in a changing world’.

Miallo State School had their celebrations last week and Principal Annette Ridley, spoke with Newsport about the event.

“We hold this event annually to celebrate Under 8s and invite local Kindy’s and Playgroups.

Our Prep to Year 3 students at school are involved and this year Alexandra Bay SS students came to join in,” Ms Ridley said.

“The involvement and behaviour of the children/students was excellent.

“The day came together beautifully and was worth all of the planning and organisation. Our Seniors were stellar, and we could not have done it without them.”

The celebrations and activities this year included a petting zoo, face painting, cupcake decorating, slime, mask making, playdough, box construction, painting, threading, bubble blowing, water play, science activity and pirate hats.

Children could also do the obstacle course, use the scooter boards, or play parachute games also

“Popular this year was our Japanese culture marquee, set up complete with low tables and mats where children made moving origami creatures,” Ridley said.

“Our Senior students all have roles on this day, helping to set up and run the activities all morning. We had the Mossman Library and local Police attend as well.

“Special thanks to generosity of Coles Port Douglas for the fruit donation and Pam M for the cupcakes.”

The event is usually run in May but even though delayed the day ran great for all the students at Miallo State School.
