Each week I will be summing up the events, achievements and news from the schools that make our region great. If you have anything you would like covered, please contact me at rowan@newsport.com.au.

The Douglas Shire has students that shine not only in classrooms but on the track, dance studios, football field and so many other areas and arenas.

Djarragun College

Lower Primary celebrated National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day during the week! Great to see!

Miallo State School

The school had their delayed Under 8’s Day! Plenty of photos taken and you can see them this week through our Facebook.

Mossman State High School

The Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program provided via RES (road safety education Australia) came to the school and was coordinated and organised by the Rotary Club of Mossman Inc.

Year 11 students in three groups rotated through six 35-minute sessions during the day. Each session was facilitated by volunteers from Police, Driving School Instructor, Queensland Health, and Bill Bellero, and a wheelchair bound member of our community.

The facilitators showed the students such things as Mind Matters (personal awareness and responsibilities), speed and stopping, road choices, crash investigations, with them coming away with a whole different mindset on owning and driving a vehicle.

Thank you to Mossman Rotary for providing the upfront organising, and lunches for teachers and facilitators as well as to Douglas Shire Council, Mossman Show Society, Sharks Rugby League Club, Port Douglas and Mossman Driving School, Bellero Sand and Gravel, Mossman High School and Rotarians for helping to make this event possible each year for the upcoming young learner drivers in our community.

Huge congratulations to Year 10 Student Prudence Dean who has been awarded a place at the Queensland Theatre’s Residency Week. This is an amazing achievement and only 50 students from Queensland were offered a spot! Huge effort Pru!

St Augustine’s Mossman

During the week the Prep - Year 2's celebrated 100 days of school by dressing up and inviting their grandparents to come along for activities and a shared morning tea. This is such a great idea, and everybody looked amazing!

Wonga Beach State School

Wonga Beach SS students are flexing their athletic chops once again! Eric, Khobi and Zamirah have all qualified to represent TCN schools at the Peninsula Track and Field Championships on August 21st and 22nd at Barlow Park. With the Olympics coming to our shores in a decade these three will be names to watch! Great work!

Wonga Beach State School also had their NAIDOC Day celebrations during the week. They held stations of dancing, music & singing, yarning circle, weaving and painting
