Police warn partygoers to drink and act responsibly

Party behaviour needs curbing

Port Douglas residents and visitors to the region have been reminded by local police that they should act responsibly while consuming alcohol and in some cases, partying into the small hours of the morning.
The warning comes after a series of late-night partying and revelling which has caused complaints to police about excessive noise, disturbances and bad behaviour.
Senior Sergeant Damien Meadows of Port Douglas Police told Newsport that recently beach partygoers have been warned off playing loud music near beach-side residences.
“The loud, amplified music at ridiculous hours of the morning is certainly interfering with people’s way of life, and it can result in significant fines for persons involved,” Sen Sgt Meadows said.
Respect and consideration for others, the officer said, appears to have been put aside too often lately, resulting in strong reminders by police that public consumption of alcohol is illegal in Queensland.
“People need to be reminded, if they can’t consume alcohol in an appropriate manner, police will enforce the law and people will often end up with an appearance in front of a magistrate if they can’t tow the line,” he said.
“I know people want to go out and enjoy themselves – that’s fine, we’re not the fun police – but if their behaviour’s impacting upon other people’s way of life, well that’s when we’ll step in.”
In the meantime, a woman guest at the Oaks Port Douglas resort was removed from the resort’s pool by police last week, after a drunken tirade of swearing and abuse against staff when she was asked to hop out of the pool.
Police said she had asked other guests to buy drinks for her after being cut off, and was seen in a video holding a drink in the pool.
The 45-year-old holidaymaker was kicked out of the resort the following day.
