Masks have now become commonplace with COVID, but the Douglas Arts Studio Gallery has taken them as inspiration for their latest creative exhibition.

For thousands of years masks have come in different forms and have been used for many reasons be it for protection, disguise, cultural, ritual, or festive reasons – for this reason DAB’s ‘Behind the Mask’ will offer something for everybody.

With opening night this Friday August 5 and running through to Saturday 3rd September this is DAB’s second exhibition for the year.

Mayor Michael Kerr will be officially opening the exhibition with all DAB members and VIPs invited to attend.

Mandy Ryan from the Gallery Sub-Committee told Newsport why the theme of masks was so present in our lives.

“To truly peer behind the mask we wear ourselves and portray that creatively is a task that may seem confronting but will make for an incredible exhibition that looks at the essence of human nature itself – raw and revealing,” she said.

“It is often said we have three faces; the first face you show to the world, the second to close friends and family, and the third you wear only when you are alone.”

The wearing of masks plays a part in the drama and energy of a tribal dance; the intrigue and enchantment of a masked ball; or the mysterious strength and hidden identity of the superhero.

While these are all physical, visible masks, it can be argued that we all wear invisible masks – different layers to our personalities and what makes humans truly complicated in our own ways.

Artists have been encouraged to provide an Artist’s Statement to advise the viewer what inspired them to create the artwork and why it meets the theme, which has made this exhibition a little more challenging than others for members to work out and create their artworks.

The exhibition will include pottery and glass work and paintings.

Drinks will be available for purchase and nibbles provided on Opening night and it is encouraged to come and enjoy the results of DAB's talented artists, who have been working enthusiastically to produce some wonderful pottery, glass and other art forms for this theme.

The exhibition will be open daily from 10am to 2pm (except Sundays) from 6th August to 3rd September at Douglas Arts Studio Gallery located at 11 Mill Street, Mossman.
