A newly constructed shared bicycle pathway has been met with widespread positivity across the Douglas shire with a range of local community members taking to social media to praise the track.

In recent days Cooya Beach locals and those from surrounding townships have taken advantage of sunny conditions to test drive new sections of the bikeway.

An explanation on the Douglas shire website suggests that when done the trail will fully link the Junction road turnoff with Bonnie Doon road, and Junction bridge and the Captain Cook highway with Mossman south, via Cooya Beach.

Douglas shire also noted there will be a further offshoot of the path which will extend from Melaleuca Drive to Bougainvillea St.

In total the trailway system will be 4.7kms.

“The pathway is absolutely awesome and I can’t wait to ride the kids to school on it,” a commenter said on Facebook.

“I just rode my bike on the new pathway into town,” Wendy Mead wrote.

“There were a few (people) walking (on it) as well. So nice to be able to do this and feel safe from the traffic.

“Those who are anti this should try it today with the sun shining… just wonderful. Go on you lot, give it a go.”

Another commenter also gave it a glowing review.

“Yes, I have walked it a few times with the dogs,” Mr Robb explained.

“It is so good and safe and I have seen people with disabilities also using it, it is really good.”
