Paula Richardson and Liz Barker are excited to take part in September’s Gran Fondo event.

September's iconic Port Douglas Gran Fondo festival is set to lure a vast array of weekend warriors and hardcore competitors and among them will be two keen participants who’ll tackle their course on e-bikes.

Both Paula Richardson and Liz Barker have signed up for the 48km one-way Medio Fondo ride, which will see the pair and many others make the 48km journey from Palm Cove to Port Douglas on September 11.

More broadly the action packed, family friendly festival will run from September 9-11.

Ms Richardson took possession of her e-bike two months ago to prepare for her big ride, while Ms Barker is just as excited to take part.

“I’m really excited about it, it’s something I’d never really considered (doing) as I’m very much a recreational cyclist,” Ms Barker told Newsport from Cairns Esplanade.

“When I heard about the event and became aware some friends were also going to take part, I just thought it would be a fun opportunity.

“I’ll be riding my e-bike and I feel that will make the experience just that more enjoyable - my husband has entered the 100km

“I encourage anyone out there that is interested but hasn’t nominated to get involved - this really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Participants can also take part in 136km and 100km courses throughout the event.

Other highights across the festival weekend includes a criterium, Hemingway’s Brewery Sprint, Choo Choos free family ride, the Marina festival expo, local live music and an after party.
