Brilliant burger bar

N17 scores a top nomination

Despite Port Douglas being a busy tourist town and the home to some of the finest restaurants in Oz, anyone who lives here will tell you there are times late at night when you’ve got the munchies, it looks more like a ghost town. Particularly now with eateries struggling to get staff. But one place you can rely on for a feed is N17 at 22 Macrossan St.
Beef from the tablelands and another nod
Mouth-watering 100% Black Angus beef burgers await with a myriad of craft beers to wash them down. This is no greasy spoon and owner Simon MacLeod is careful not to drop the ball. That’s why they’ve been nominated for the second year in a row in the Restaurant and Catering Association Awards, taking in Far North Queensland. He and the team are in the running for Best Restaurant in a pub/club setting plus consumer vote award “It’s a very prestigious award to win so to know the team and N17 are in there with a chance is great and remember this takes in Far North Queensland and the Northern Territory so the competition is tough,” said Simon. N17 has already won several awards including Port Douglas’s best takeaway, so the team is used to accolades.
From backpacker to businessman
Simon originally came from the UK 10 years ago and backpacked around Australia, before working fulltime as a chef in some of the most iconic eateries in Port Douglas like Harrisons, the Central Hotel, Tin Shed and Hog’s Breath Cafe where Choo Choo’s now resides. But in 2018 it was time to bite the bullet and start his own business and so he came up with N17 which takes its name from a North London postcode.
Sport and the Special
There’s the sports bar with multiple Giant Ultra HD TV screens so you don’t miss any of the action on the field and for non-beer drinkers there’s heaps of spirits inhabiting the place. Before I left, Simon reminded me that if you are heading to N17 for a burger the house ‘Special’ is a must, unless of course you’re a vego or vegan. But you’re catered for with other burger options so don’t stress.
Check this out fellow carnivores.
A Black Angus beef patty, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, beetroot, fried egg, hickory smoked bacon, red onion marmalade and their N17 sauce, served on a glazed milk bun.
Believe me it’s a meal and then some.
