In August last year, Council asked for feedback on concept designs of a new Green Ant adventure play space in Rex Smeal Park. After receiving feedback from locals, the concept for the playground has now been finalised.

The playground would be built entirely in the area under the fig tree, making full use of the shade this tree provides.

It would feature an enchanted forest where children will discover larger than life creatures such as dragonflies, butterflies and cicadas; hidden tunnels and a lookout atop the larger than life green ant’s nest five-metres in the air.

Councillor Abigail Noli said that a unique and beautiful play area for our local children is what she desired when she suggested the nature based playground for Rex Smeal Park.

“The current playground was dated and in need of an upgrade”, Ms Noli said.

“Naturally shaded, not located in park thoroughfares, complementary to the beautiful tree and a design that is appropriate for a diversity of ages, the green ant design is a winner”.

“Green ants are endemic to Australia and above all to this part of Australia, it is a design unique for Port Douglas. It will be lovely for our local children.

She has worked through a few ideas for the playground with school students and she is confident that all ages of kids will find enjoyment.

Council has allocated funds in the 2021/22 budget to complete planning, consultation and preparation of final concept plans and technical specifications to have a shovel ready project by 31 December 2021.
