It’s a big thumbs up for one of Far North Queensland’s newest and most spirited distilleries with Devils Thumb bagging Best Australian Navy in the World Gin Awards 2022 announced on the weekend.

Devils Thumb co-founder, Craig Parsell said the team are “a little speechless but immensely proud” to take home this coveted title, along with a silver for the distillery’s Rainforest Gin and bronze for its Signature Dry.

Representing a clean sweep with all three Devils Thumb gin styles awarded, the Port Douglas based distillery, also produces Australian Cane Spirit and barrel aged rum.

In securing the country’s highest accolade, the 58.8 per cent alcohol based (ABV) Devils Thumb Navy Strength Gin now has a tilt at the World’s Best title, competing against an impressive roll call of global winners that will be announced on 24 February 2022.

“This recognition among a really prestigious line up of contenders gives us great confidence in what we are doing as distillers and is a pat on the back for our team during a challenging time for our food and beverage industry,” Mr Parsell said.

“More broadly, the awards focus the spotlight on Far North Queensland as a destination and its fresh abundance of tropical produce which together with human ingenuity is leading the way in what is a burgeoning hand crafted and artisan gin industry,” he said.

Devils Thumb Head Distiller and co-founder, Mark Norman the driving and defining force of the Navy Strength Gin lies in its inherently native Australian quality and distinctive, Far North Queensland, sense of place.

“Drawing on the sensory aromas and citrus flavours of traditional botanicals like angelica, navel oranges and local bush lemons, and ingredients from our rainforest and reef landscape, notably native red finger limes and a touch of seawater, this gin has a special character – it is a harmony of many elements that make it truly unique,” Mr Norman said.

“We are blessed here in Far North Queensland with an extraordinary range of exotic tastes and flavours at our fingertips, which in essence, along with the tropical climate, rainforest water and time-honoured traditions of the best distilleries in the world, comprise the award-winning cornerstones of Devils Thumb,” he said.
