A woman in her 20s was airlifted from the outer Great Barrier Reef to Cairns Hospital over the weekend with a jellyfish sting.

The Queensland Ambulance Service said they received an emergency call at around 8.20am on Saturday after a report that the woman had received a sting on the shoulder.

She was transported in a stable condition by a Queensland Govt Air rescue helicopter from a reef cruise vessel at Saxon Reef, about 60 kilometres east of Port Douglas a short time later.

An area health spokesperson confirmed a short time ago that the 24-year-old woman was treated for a suspected Irukandji jellyfish sting, and discharged from Cairns Hospital on Sunday.
