Newsport journalist Jamie’s most meaningful story of the year; the Port Douglas ‘Bike Lady’

End-of-year review
It might seem a recurring theme of mine; women that kick ass and do something good for our community. In this case; Port Douglas local Claudia Sygne, also known as the ‘Bike Lady’.
In February this year Claudia showed a rock-solid determination to help children in need by collecting recycling items all throughout town on her bike - without even having one day off.
Her personal story stood out to me as she has been on a number of volunteering trips to India throughout her life and even taking it a step further by deciding to sell her house in Port Douglas in order to dedicate more time to charity work.
When I contacted Claudia to arrange an interview, she spoke with passion about her project.
I formulated some additional questions and sent them to her by email. In response I received the answers in an old-school letter which she had pushed under the door of the Newsport office.
She had taken her time to tell her life story and about her devotion to helping others, all perfectly written down over four pieces of paper.
Although it took me some time to decipher her handwriting, writing a letter again showed her unstoppable dedication.
Claudia’s story is inspirational as well as admirable and it is just what our little community needs and I hope to be writing more of these ‘kind-deed’ stories in the coming year(s).
