Have you got the M- factor? - Miallo State School

In Miallo State School’s annual M-factor talent show held last week, students battled it out to see who had the ‘M Factor’.

There were dance solos, duos, trios and groups along with instrumental music performances in piano and guitar and a number of variety acts including drama, parkour and a rubik cube duo.

The event was emceed by the school’s very own Matilda and Mali who did a fabulous job.

Principal of the school, Anet Ridley, said there has been a wide array of guest celebrity judges over the years and this year was no different.

“Students went wild for judges T-Rex all the way from Jurassic World, Joy from ‘Inside Out’ Pixar movies and from a galaxy far, far away, Darth Vader. Rock on Miallo!”

Mossman State High School science students go out into the field

The last few weeks have been an excursion central for the Mossman SHS Science Department.

With Year 7 students going to the Aquarium, Year 10’s exploring the Reef and the Year 11
Biology students spending three days in the rainforest at Cape Tribulation.

Year 11 Biology camp was also a success with students completing a series of mandatory practicals as part of their Unit 3 studies at the JCU Daintree Rainforest Observatory.

This field trip was not without some minor hiccoughs though, with a broken-down vehicle on the way home.

Luckily staff members from the Daintree Ice Cream Company came to the rescue - and not just with ice cream and coffee.

HOD of Science and Agriculture at Mossman SHS, Mrs Mary-Anne Zahnow, said: “At times like these you really appreciate the tropical far north’s sense of community”.

“It was fantastic to visit the Aquarium again, I’m not sure who was more excited – the staff or the students,” Ms Zahnow added.

“Our school was given a guided tour around the aquarium and discovered how our coral reefs and marine ecosystems are changing and adapting.

“The students have been busy since their trip, using the information they learnt to complete their assessment task.”

Pool trip with Mossman State High School’s Year 7’s

On Thursday the November 24,, Mossman SHS bundled 80 Year 7 students into two buses and headed to Cairns for a day of pool fun.

This trip was because the school’s Year 7’s missed their camp this year due to a scheduling conflict.

Acting Deputy Principal at Mossman SHS, Belinda Guthrie, said it was the perfect day for it.

“As we drove out of Mossman, we could see the sun peeking out from behind the clouds and we knew we were heading for sunshine in Cairns.

“Students disembarked from the buses and after a brief safety talk they got straight into the fun, taking advantage of the Jump Zone and tackling the giant inflatable obstacle course.

“We would like to commend our kids for their outstanding behaviour and their wonderful inclusive attitude towards their peers yesterday. The day was an absolute pleasure to be part of.”

Mossman State School

On Tuesday night, Mossman State School celebrated the graduation of their wonderful Year 6 students for 2022.

Head of Teaching and Learning, Sharon Case, said she would like to thank the Douglas Shire Council for allowing the school use the Port Douglas Community Hall free of charge.

"What a fantastic venue," she said. "Thank you Port Douglas Catering for the delicious meals and Woolworths for the yummy cake.

"A very big thank you to our amazing staff, Miss Bellero, Mr Love, Ms Sandra and Ms Lesleigh for all of their efforts in ensuring the success of the night.

"Thank you parents for raising such incredible young people and supporting their education journey. Good luck at high school kids, we are really going to miss you!"
