Our local golden agers slipped into their best Christmas attire to bring in the holiday cheer.

Residents of Mossman’s Kubirri Aged Care Centre smartened up last week to head down to the local bowls club for a special Christmas lunch.

All the seniors had a blast, with one resident in particular. He was treated to his favourite meal; spaghetti bolognese, which reminded him of a meal his mother used to make when he was a young boy.

The residents were accompanied by carers Susan and Peter, who also enjoyed themselves at the lunch.

Susan has been working at the Centre for around five months and often takes residents out to go shopping, takes them to their appointments and assists them with visiting their family.

Peter has been at Kubirri Aged Care Centre for 18 months and often helps the Centre’s Lifestyle Coordinators prepare Karaoke and ‘Sing Along’ on Fridays.

A very Kewarra Christmas

Residents and staff at Kewarra Aged Care also celebrated in style with a sumptuous party to kick off the Christmas season.

Some of Santa’s extra-special helpers got to work setting up a beautiful Christmas table and soon it was laden down with goodies prepared by talented Chef Carsten.

Residents were treated to an extensive and luxurious feast with marinated king prawn and roasted chicken breast with cranberry, bacon, and caramelised onion.

Of course, no Christmas feast would be complete without plum pudding, served with chef’s special brandy custard and bourbon vanilla ice cream.

Alan Russack entertained partygoers, belting out all of the Christmas favourites and everyone got into the festive spirit, dancing and singing along. One delighted resident commented on the ‘buzz in the air’ and everyone had the most wonderful day.

Seniors invited to weekly men’s breakfast

A place where men gather over breakfast and yarn about life, that is the idea of the weekly ‘Men’s Breakfast’ at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre.

Every Wednesday men of all ages, nationalities and life experiences gather and share stories, all the while they enjoy a scrumptious feed of bacon, eggs, sausages and coffee or tea.

Since its inception four years ago, the Men’s Breakfast has built an attendance of up to 20 people per week and has been the basis of many strong friendships.

This even resulted in previous fishing excursions and a trip up to Daintree Village to go croc spotting and barra fishing earlier this year.

Local and visitor seniors are welcome to join every Wednesday morning on the back veranda with coffee or tea from 8.30am and meals starting at 9.00am.

There is no need to book, just bring along your hungry tummy and look forward to sharing stories.

Every week Newsport puts the spotlight on the seniors in our region - because there’s nothing that goes above our local golden agers. If you would like to be included in the seniors wrap-up, please contact jamie@newsport.com.au.
