Belly dancing seniors at end-of-year party

Weekly seniors wrap-up
Seniors are an integral part of our community and there is a lot we can learn from them. Every week Newsport puts the spotlight on the seniors in our region - because there’s nothing that goes above our local golden agers.
Douglas Shire Seniors Inc. Christmas Party
The Douglas Shire Seniors held an all-singing, all-dancing Christmas Party last Tuesday, 13 December, at the Mossman Bowls Club.
Over 70 seniors were entertained by musician Peter Clarke and by Mossman’s Belly Dancers.
Secretary Ann Booth said it was lovely to see a few of the seniors ‘helping out’ the belly dancers, “with the approval of their peers who cheered them on as they enjoyed the afternoon”.
“A lovely Christmas dinner was served up by the Bowls Club and there were lots of Door and Raffle prizes on offer.” Ms Booth said.
“All in all, it was an enjoyable finale to another successful year for the Douglas Shire Seniors.
“Each class has held their own end-of-year party and the Club will now go into its annual ‘nanna-nap’ until starting all activities again in February.
The Douglas Seniors Inc has on offer fitness classes, Glee Club, singing group, indoor bowls, Hoy mornings and weekly Bingo sessions.
Throughout the year there are many extra functions and the Seniors are looking forward to more outings in 2023 as Covid restrictions wind down.
The Club has been operating for 17 years and new recruits are always welcome. For information contact Ann on jandma@aapt.net.au or ring 040981543.
Senior Sveta Hurford in the spotlight
This week the Port Douglas Neighbourhood would like to put the spotlight on their wonderful senior and volunteer Sveta Hurford.
Sveta and her Husband David ran the English Language School in Port Douglas for many years before their retirement.
Luckily for our community she has continued to serve in the Shire as a dedicated volunteer at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre for over twenty years now.
“I started here at the Neighbourhood Centre but now volunteer at Mossman Support Services as well,” she said.
“I love to volunteer, it means everything to me. It's connecting to people, places and stories. I just feel it empowers me too, because, as you know, we rise as we raise others.
“As a teacher I just feel empowering others empowers me. I love doing it and will continue doing it till the day I die.”
Among her many volunteer roles Sveta works in the Nic Nak Shed sorting area.
She has a passion for fixing and remaking jewellery to sell in the Nic Nak Shed to raise funds for the Port Douglas Community Service Network Inc.
Thank you for your service to our community Sveta!
