The month of December has well and truly kicked off with celebrations for residents at the Kubirri Aged Care Centre in Mossman.

In addition to the Centre’s monthly birthday party for residents and weekly karaoke, residents were surprised with a special visit from members of the Queensland Youth Orchestra.

Performing in the Centre’s chapel, the talented musicians performed a much enjoyed concert.

Residents also got into the ‘Christmas spirit’ helping their Lifestyle Coordinator, Maria, to decorate the Centre with a Christmas tree.

Overall, the residents enjoyed the first week of December, which was filled with fun, festivities and celebration.

Meantime in other senior news…

70 years strong

Seventy years of marriage is traditionally celebrated with the gift of platinum. The precious metal symbolises the strength, rarity, endurance, and purity of true love.

For Edna and Edwin (Roy) Hopton, residents at Kewarra Aged Care Centre, these qualities perfectly capture the special relationship between the pair.

Now both residents at Kewarra Aged Care, the couple met and fell in love while working in the same factory in England. It was love at first sight, with Edna vowing, “I’m going to marry that man”.

Married in 1952, they emigrated to Australia in 1952 and built a life in South Australia, welcoming a son, David, who sadly passed away in a car accident aged 18.

Roy and Edna relocated to Cairns and have lived here for the last 23 years.

The team at Kewarra couldn’t let such an important milestone go unrecognised, so organised a private lunch for the special couple. Soft music played in the background as they enjoyed a delicious three course meal with wine to celebrate.

Brenda Hand, manager at Kewarra, said, “Edna and Roy are such a beautiful couple”.

“Seeing the special connection that they still share, and the love they have for each other is so powerful. We could almost feel it radiate from them. It was a privilege to be a part of their special celebration.”

Christmas cooking at Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre

Seniors can indulge themselves at making yummy rum balls and other Christmas treats at the last of this year’s successful Fortnightly Foodies Group next Wednesday 14 December.

Fortnightly Foodies is an inclusive, welcoming group who get together to try new recipes, share delicious food, have a chat and participate in food related Quizzes.
The group is led by Community Development worker Belinda Fischer who has an extensive repertoire of recipes with a focus on country style cooking with special guests who come along and demonstrate new recipes.

Come along, meet new people and cook up some Christmas Treats!

Seniors are welcome to come along at 11.00am on December 14 at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre at 6-10 Mowbray St Port Douglas. Bookings can be made by emailing Belinda on cdwpt@pdnc.org.au or calling 07 4099 5518
