The spectacular travelling Wonderland Spiegeltent, The Long Lunch and the Street Parade are often singled out as some of the signature events of the Port Douglas Carnivale which is being held over three weekends from May 6 to May 22.

It is being themed Tropical Wonderland this year.

And this year the parade will not only provide the spectators with outstanding floats, there are cash incentives which will be a huge incentive for each float team.

Included in the prizes, the Best Overall Float will win $1000; Best Business Float $1000; Best Community Float $750; Best Youth Entry (under 16) $350 and best individual (solo act) $200.

“The real reward is in the collaboration and community spirit at this hugely popular event, so get your team together, organise your best tropical costumes and bling, and register now,” said Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr.

Float registrations

Port Douglas Carnivale is currently putting the call out to local businesses and community to get their float registrations in for the much-loved Street Parade.

And while we know that this event is special and some like to attend the Spiegeltent each night, they can look forward this year to a circus, cabaret, comedy, burlesque, music and family shows inside her bevelled doors and velvet curtains to Tropical North Queensland audiences.

But we want to go back in time and learn what it was like to manage this event as chairperson in 2014/15.

Stressful

“In a word, ‘stressful’, but one helluva experience,” said Roy Weavers who was chair for the two seasons and is well remembered for drawing more than 5,000 to the beach to witness the Japanese horse riding.

“With an event of this nature there are many successes and many challenges, and we were fortunate to work with highly professional sponsors, support from Council and this enabled us to create new events which were well received,” said Weavers.

Weavers was not shy to point out that insurance is a major cost; there are not enough volunteers; not enough dollars are spent on the event and it is expensive.

“I believe it has become a private event. Simply put, it’s now for those who can afford to attend,” he said.

But, says Weavers, and despite the long hours and stress, it was a great experience.

Kick-off

The parade kicks off at 6.30pm, followed by a fireworks display at 8.15pm.

Adding to the atmosphere on the night will be the Wonderland Spiegeltent, the Carnivale Fun Fair and food stalls, and Port Douglas restaurants and bars.

Spiegeltent shows and other events will open on May 7 with comedian Akmal’s Best of Akmal.
