Sharks claim second straight road win

Sharks win
It wasn’t pretty but Mossman/Port Douglas Sharks overcame a dogged Edmonton Storm outfit to remain unbeaten in this year’s CDRL A-Grade competition.
On the road for the second straight week, the Sharks trailed 16-12 at halftime before jumping out of the gates after the break to eventually claim a 34-20 win.
Just prior to the break Edmonton were left to rue a certain try after a player dropped the ball over the line in a try scoring position.
Straight after halftime Mossman fullback Matthew Cuburn turned the game on its head, running 85 metres and beating seven defenders from a kick return to level the score at 16-all.
From there, Mossman lifted and another length of the field effort soon after helped the visitors skip to a 24-16 lead and from there they did enough to get the points.
“Full credit to Edmonton, they were very impressive and definitely did their homework against us,” experienced Sharks lock Davin Crampton told Newsport from Petersen Park.
“It’s clear they did a lot of work on their defensive patterns. They were particularly good in that opening 40 minutes. That was a very, tough match.”
Some key messages got the Sharks back on track.
“We went away from our strengths in the first half, so at the break (coach) Joel (Marama) told us to get back to the gameplan, be disciplined and things would happen,” Crampton said.
“We just had to work through our sets, build pressure and we knew we could get back into the contest.
“There’s no doubt those two tries straight after halftime gave us good momentum and were just what we needed to go on and get the two points.”
Edmonton never stopped trying all day, with Bruce Moll, Anthony Satrick and Terence Newman amongst the Storm’s best performers.
In other CDRL round two results Brothers beat Ivanhoes 28-12, Innisfail just pipped Southern Suburbs 22-20, Tully upset Mareeba 31-24 and Atherton beat Yarrabah 44-26.
