Queensland’s first Chatty Café in partnership with the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre will be launched at the Tin Shed at 10:00 tomorrow morning (Thursday).

The Chatty Café Scheme was started in 2017 as an initiative to encourage conversation among strangers. The initiative promotes the marking of certain tables in cafés and other venues as tables at which talking to strangers is explicitly welcome.

The initiative found support by several companies and politicians in the UK. The Chatty Café Scheme CIC was registered as a community interest company on 19 July 2019; Chatty Café was registered as a charity in Australia in 2020.

The founder of the initiative and director of the company, Alexandra Louise Hoskyn, was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for 2021.

According to Belinda Fischer, a Community Development Worker, a major objective is to bring people together who do not have a network.

Support system

“The Chatty Café can assist people who may be struggling to find people to talk to; it can serve as a support system and an opportunity to share experiences.

“We hope that we attract many people at our first meeting, which will continue each Thursday and we may look at moving it around to different locations,” she said.

So, if you want to connect more with your local community, meet new people, or just enjoy the company of others – why not join us. Chatty Café happens weekly upstairs, in an accessible air conditioned space at the Tin Shed, Port Douglas.
