From city life to a rainforest sanctuary, meet Jason Riches who runs the Thornton Beach Café in the Daintree.

In this week’s Do it in Douglas video, Mr Riches explains why he loves working and living in the world’s oldest tropical rainforest.

“The community is great up here and you don’t have the hustle bustle of the city. It definitely beats working in Melbourne”, he says in the video. “My blood pressure has gone right down.”

Mr Riches has worked all over the world to eventually end up in the Daintree Rainforest.

After his apprenticeship in the UK, he travelled through Europe and eventually decided to move to Melbourne where he met his partner. Together, they opened a restaurant which they eventually sold.

One east coast trip later they stumbled upon the beautiful Douglas Shire and bought a café. Mr Riches and his partner enjoy the beach daily and can't get away from this tropical paradise atmosphere.

As part of the ‘Do it in Douglas’ campaign, Douglas Shire Council, Tourism Port Douglas Daintree (TPDD) and Douglas Chamber of Commerce have launched a new series of storytelling videos that shine a light on local entrepreneurs and talent.

Do It In Douglas is about encouraging growth and prosperity in the Shire’s small business community.

The launch of nine videos will take people into the lives of those that have realised success in business and life. It also gives an inspiring and equally realistic insight into what it’s like to do business in Douglas.
