Deputy Mayor Lisa Scomazzon and husband Peter run the Newell Beach Takeaway, one of the most popular ‘fish and chip’ shops in the Shire.

But it’s not all about seafood, burgers and the like.

The couple are dedicated to being at Anzac Day commemorations that honour those who didn’t return from the battlefields and when Peter came up with an idea to have small crosses made with the names of those lost in the Douglas Shire during war, his wife got on board straight away “It was a great idea” said Lisa “66 crosses with the name of a fallen soldier put on them and one cross to represent the unknown soldier”.

Mossman RSL were excited from day one said Peter “Yeah Ron Savage and Wally Gray were onboard with the idea and made it happen with help from others in the branch.

Lisa and Peter even though they are a small business put up the cash to have the crosses made and plaques placed on them with a poppy.

“We’re free because of the soldiers from the Shire who paid the ultimate sacrifice so it’s the least we can do” said Peter. The engraving of the names on the crosses was carried out by Janet Goodall.

Today at Rex Smeal Park the crosses were placed on the cenotaph by local school kids from the Mossman State School.
