Out of a population of over 12,000 in the Douglas Shire, 1,794 cases have been reported since the start of the pandemic. Did our Shire get off lightly or can it still get worse?

Douglas Shire councillor Abigail Noli thinks that, relatively speaking, we have been lucky.

“My understanding is that there have been no deaths due to Covid in the Douglas Shire, combined with the fact that isolating in Douglas would have to be one of the best places in the world to be forced to isolate at times,” Ms Noli said.

“We have obviously endured hardships also, work and business have been affected and Covid has undoubtedly touched all our lives. Vaccines and mandates have also caused debate but overall we appear to have done well.

“I don’t think anyone doesn’t know someone who has had Covid, people have been dealing with it as best they can and family and friends have helped accordingly.”

More relaxed

With the easing of Covid restrictions and the disappearance of masks in most public spaces, people seem to be more and more relaxed about the virus.

Ms Noli said: “It would appear that people are more relaxed, let’s hope there is no reason to go back to stricter regimes.”

Last Thursday April 6, premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the further easing of the Covid restrictions.

As of 1am, Thursday April 14, most venues that have been open only to vaccinated staff and patrons will be open to all. This comes as more than 90 percent of Queenslanders aged 12 and over have been fully vaccinated.
