Last week Mayor Kerr gave his support of the Morrison Government’s $5 million pledge to deliver an all year round swimming solution in Port Douglas via a community aquatic park.

Councillors are now delivering their comments on the historic announcement.

Councillor Roy Zammataro supports the funding from the Federal Government, but thinks that an aquatic water park is not high on the list of priorities for the Douglas Shire at this point in time.

“We have a rental shortage at present and because of this, businesses are not able to operate at full capacity as workers simply have nowhere to live,” Mr Zammataro said.

“Perhaps $5 million would be better spent attempting to address this issue so that the local economy can get back on track following the drastic drop in trade over the last few years caused by the Covid pandemic.”

Councillor Abigail Noli thinks that revenue or funding that is not from the ratepayers is always appreciated. “All big projects require external funding, that is how any Council operates,” she said.
