Mossman High student receives top award and scholarship

Mossman State High School Year 12 student Ellie Zillfleisch was awarded the Peter Doherty award for Outstanding Senior STEM student on Friday 10 September by the Queensland Premier in a virtual ceremony.
Mossman High principal, Michelle Lyons said this is a very prestigious award and it puts Ellie in the top echelon for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) students in the state.
“This is a very big deal and a fantastic achievement for Ellie. It’s fantastic news for the whole region,” Mrs Lyons said
This year marks the 18th year of the awards named after Professor Peter Doherty, a Brisbane-born Nobel Prize-winning scientist who was educated at a Queensland State High School and The University of Queensland.
The Awards recognise outstanding and innovative contributions to STEM education in Queensland and in total there were 28 winners across all categories.
On top of the prestige, each winner also took home $5000 in cash for their efforts.
Mrs Lyons was full of praise for the final year student and highlighted that Ellie has already been offered several opportunities to further her studies after high school.
“Ellie has accepted an early offer to study a Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) – Science at the Australian National University. During this process Ellie also applied for several scholarships and has been successful in receiving three: ANU All-Rounder Scholarship, PhB Science Scholarship and ANU Region Scholarship worth $71,000,” she said.
